Can you make a 220 volt motor run on 120 volt?

I have retrieved a blower motor out of an old air handler. the motor is specked to run on 208/230. I would like to have it operate on 120 volt if possible. Is there a way to do that successfully without a step up transformer? If so how would I do that.

I have already wired it using the motor common as a neutral and the hot leg to the High speed leg and it spins but slowly.

No, not if it wasn’t designed to do that when manufactured. The windings are not right to produce the proper magnetic field to drive the armature with the wrong voltage.

A step up transformer that could drive a motor might cost you more than a new 120 volt motor.

And I am not sure with a transformer if it will work properly although to ground it may appear to be generating the proper voltage. The problem is it is not just voltage. You are dealing with the windings generating a magnetic field and there is a bit of a lag time in the field generating and collapsing.

Draw the different wave forms. Draw a 120 volt sign wave. Then a 240 volt wave using two 120 volts lines 180 degrees out of phase. Then draw a 240 volt sign wave with a single hot and a neutral. You will see they aren’t the same.

Think of it this way. The normal out of phase 240 volts, using two 120 lines is like two people standing at a single point and each running in opposite directions 120 feet away then back. Then they trade places and do it again.

Using a step up transformer is like one person running 240 feet one way and back and then 240 feet the other way and back.

Yes, the same amount of distance is covered (voltage) but they are no where near the same functionally.
