How To Reupholster A Chair
I know you love those old chairs handed down through the generations but the time has come to finally update them and make them look new again. It is actually fairly simple to reupholster a chair given that you have a little bit of handyman (or woman) type skills. You are going to need a few things to get started: 1. New fabric
2. New cushion material (recommended if the chair is very old)
3. Upholstery stapler (preferably pneumatic or electric) and upholstery staples
4. Flat screwdriver
5. A sharp utility type knife/blade Once you’ve got your supplies together you’re going to want to remove the old fabric and staples from the chair. Simply tip the chair upside down and work from the middle to each corner using your flat blade screw driver to remove the staples. Be very careful when removing the old fabric as this will be used as your guide for the new fabric. Once you’ve removed the fabric inspect the cushion and if it is nasty then throw it away and replace it with a new one! Lay out the new fabric on a flat surface and put the old fabric on top. Use the old fabric as a guide and cut at least a 2 inch border to ensure you have enough excess to complete a nice looking chair. Now that you’ve got the fabric cut and ready, you need to put the cushion material back and put the newly cut fabric over the chair to start the stapler process. Begin in the center of the chair and use your upholstery stapler moving to one corner to start the stapling process. Ensure when using your upholstery stapler you use a fine wire 7 series staple. After you have completed one side then move to the next and always start in the middle and work your way out. The gaps between staples should be ½ inch to 1 inch. You’re almost done! Now take a sharp utility knife and cut off any excess fabric from the underside of the chair. Make sure that you pulled the fabric tight and you have a nice clean looking chair. The last and final step is to step back and admire your handiwork, call your friends and brag or post photos on your facebook page – nice work!
