can i use an embossing leveler on wooden underlayment?

Scraped off the old vinyl sheet, but a little dried adhesive remains in a few spots, and a few chips of wood came off in other spots (cheap lauan underlay). I have a bunch of roberts embossing leveler I used on vinyl in the other room, can I use it to fill the low spots I’ve created? Can I just firmly trowel it everywhere so it fills only what needs to be? The new vinyl is no glue type, adhesive tape only in doorway (no seams). Also, the old skimcoat seemed very fragile due to moisture (its a bathroom) so its the other reason I’m considering using a little bit of the leveler. I’ve already sanded the wood somewhat smooth w a belt sander, but can’t take off too much since underlay is 1/4, and I don’t want to put another layer on.
