What are the system requirements/specifications for playing HD videos/movies online?
and what should be the net speed?
It depends on what’s meant by HD — it can mean a lot of different things.
What I would consider “real” HD basically means 1080p (1920×1080 pixels or different colored dots on the screen, 24 times a second or more). However, some people call 720i (1280×720) HD.
Requirements for monitor and video card:
To play 1080p at full quality, your requirements are a screen that has 1920×1080 actual resolution or better (in both directions, with the same aspect ratio), and an HD video card that can decode the compression used (x264) in realtime.
Technically, very few monitors will meet the 1080p spec (though some monitors are WAY better than HD), but many meet the lower 720p spec that a lot of smaller so-called “HD” TVs use. Either way, your monitor playing HD will look a LOT better than an SD TV playing the same thing.
Obviously your monitor should be widescreen. Most monitors have an aspect ratio of 16:10. HD content is 16:9, so if you mostly want the monitor for movies, get one that matches the 16:9, to avoid small black bars.
Requirements for broadband:
With good compression (again, x264), you can stream an HD movie at about 6Mbps CONSTANTLY. To get constant speeds like that, you actually need broadband that’s a bit faster — more like 8Mpbs. Most broadband isn’t this fast (more like 4Mbps), though you might be lucky and find out that yours is OK (it usually depends on the line quality and distance from a phone exchange). A high-priced cable internet package should have no trouble — they tend to be much faster, with lower latency — the cable is designed for streaming movies, after all.
BUT, you’ll find a lot of sites that offer “HD” movie streaming actually compress them heavily, so the requirements (and quality) are much lower, even if the resolution matches 1080p. I’ve never even seen a site offering streaming at 1080p though.
A much simpler way around the bandwidth issue is to use Miro (a free Internet TV show downloader which supports both SD and HD content, depending on the show). It will download one show while you watch others, therefore you don’t need to worry about the bandwidth not keeping up all the time; the show will get there and be ready to watch sooner or later; it just means you can’t watch it 24 hours a day in HD… but who does that?
