Installing Outlet and Switch Boxes
Mount receptacles at the same height as the existing wall outlets in the home, which is usually about 12 inches above the . In a kitchen, utility room, or closet, you may want to mount the outlet boxes at about a 3-foot height for easier access, but before doing so be certain you can get wiring to them in that location. Where an outlet is placed above a counter top, the cabinet underneath can often be removed and a hole punched in the wall behind it in order to install the outlet wiring.
In most rooms, a receptacle should be placed on each wall and a second one on walls with 12 or more feet of usable space (open areas without windows or doors). Walls with less than 3 feet of space do not need an outlet. These are guidelines,
but there is no maximum number of outlets, and it is better to have too many than too few.
If switches are to be added on some circuits, boxes for them should be mounted on the inside of rooms near the doorway and opposite to the hinge side of the door. Place switches close to the door opening and at the same height as existing switches in the home. In old homes, the switches may be mounted lower than seems preferable now, but it is better to maintain a consistent appearance throughout.
Outlet boxes mounted in finished walls must be the type that can be secured in the wall by means of anges that tighten against both sides of the wallboard. These are called remodel boxes and are nearly always made of hard plastic. Do not try to use the stud-mounted boxes intended for new construction. You will not often a stud located near the hole you cut in the wall for the box and even if you do, it is almost impossible to attach the box to the stud with only the small wall opening to work through. Wallboard-mounted remodel outlet boxes work well, but should be permanently installed only after the cable going to them has been pulled into place. Remember also, boxes that mount ? ush in the wall and accept a hidden cable from behind are different from boxes that mount on the surface of the wall or protrude from it and accept cable from a surface raceway. Figure 5-1 shows three types of boxes: on the left is a standard stud-mounted metal box for use in un? nished walls, in the center is a wallboard-mo
nted remodel box (with grip tab extended) for use in finished walls, and at the right is a surfacemounted
box with mounting plate for use on wall surfaces with a raceway.
In unfinished areas, stud-mounted boxes or boxes with mounting brackets attached can be used and secured in place with nails or screws. Mount the outlet box on a stud, ush to the stud’s outer edge if the wall will not be nished later, or protruding from the stud edge the thickness of the wallboard used in the home (3/8 inch to 5/8 inch) if it will.
