A Golf Shanking Party Is One You Never Want An Invite To
If you are on the golf course you seldom hear the word
golf shanking
uttered among the patrons. When it first occurs on the course, it can quickly escalate. However, for some golfers once it happens it might continue throughout the course of their round because it gets in their head to the point of obsession.
It is an embarrassing situation for beginners as well as the most experienced golfers because it is quite an ugly result of a golf swing. A perfect shot in golf will both sound and look perfect, and it will be obvious to all. Golf shanks, in contrast, are not works of art. They are the stuff of nightmares, and they sound and look as horrible as a perfect swing is beautiful.
Golf shanking
generally is the result of an uneven distribution of weight during the swing. Generally too much weight it put on the toes during the downswing. The ball will then be vulnerable to being struck by the shaft – not the head – of the club, This causes the ball to shoot straight out rather than sailing up and over. The ball travels almost at 90 degrees as to where the player is aiming. This can be very embarrassing.
This can be avoided simply by keeping one’s weight firmly on the heels rather than the toes. Stability is a key ingredient throughout the swing. Correct stability will keep you from making the natural mistake of shifting your weight onto your toes. Sometimes beginning golfers lean forward toward the ball when addressing it. It is at this point that the golfer places the majority of his weight on his toes. You are most at risk of doing this when using your irons, not your driving club. While it can happen with

, you do not have as much to worry about.
Veteran players are not immune to shanking syndrome. If they have too narrow a swing arc, they will be just as likely to develop this problem as a newbie. This means that your swing arc narrows and the only way you can make good contact with the ball then is to lean into it. This then causes the weight to shift to the toes. This results in the nightmare of the shanked shot.
A narrow swing arc happens when you do not turn your shoulder. A remedy for shoulder turning is to insure that your left shoulder is over your right knee as you begin your backswing.
Golf shanking is a result of one of two things: a poor golf path, or a poor golf swing. If the golfer has an extreme inside-out swing or an outside-in swing, along with the open clubface, this can also cause the shank shot.
Golf instructors like Rick Grayson believe this can be quickly remedied. He suggests that you go to the driving range and place two golf tees in the ground. Let them be at least six inches apart so that they form a gate of sorts. Then take an iron club and practice your swing over and over again until you no longer hit either golf tee.
Golf shanking does not only happen on full swings, Grayson warns. It can happen on a short shot, and is called “chip-shanking”. This can feel worse for a player because a short shot is so much simpler than a full one. When the club is taken too far inside the takeaway the player risks becoming the victim of a chip-shank. Grayson recommends putting the ball about an inch behind the club before you go through the motions. Continue this drill until the ball goes straight back as you make your motion.
Once you shank it can then become a nightmare as you fear you will repeat. This can quickly become a habit, one that could destroy your enjoyment of the great game of golf.
