The Steering System of a Car operates through Power Steering Cylinder
The most exciting experience comes while driving a vehicle, when it takes sharp turns. However nobody knows which part of the vehicle provides such enormous power to the speedy vehicle. This is where it comes to understand that how the power steering system of the car works. Power Steering is similar to a hydraulic pump that drives through a motor and delivers pressurized hydraulic fluid to both sides of the steering mechanism. Through the pressurized hydraulic fluid approaching on the steering mechanism the vehicle easily get turn without any steering effort. Power steering system is not a drive-by-wire system however it’s a power assisted steering.
The power steering cylinder and the steering gear are the two main components available in a power steering mechanism. Usually the cylinder is attached to the front of the engine and driven by the accessory drive chain in most of the cases. To generate sufficient fluid pressure at idle, the size of the cylinder should be enough. The speed of the engine increases as the pump spins faster and a pressure relief valve is used to keep the pressure at the desired levels.
Steering gear is the most important part of this system and they are of types – rack and pinion, and recirculating ball type. Rack and Pinion is mostly used in modern cars. Hydraulic fluid that comes from the cylinder enters the steering gear and returns at low pressure side in the power assisted system. Inside the gear box, there is an installed valve system that directs fluid out which reenters later. This pressurized fluid acts on the power piston to help steering.
Now it becomes easier for you to understand that when you take a right turn, additional fluid is directed to the right side of the piston, which helps slide the rack and therefore steer the tires. However it becomes difficult to steer the vehicle when the engine is off. If either of these conditions exists, it is advised not to turn a vehicle with power steering.
