Jet ski’s not running right?
This weekend I helped a buddy with his two jet ski’s. One is a 4 stroke 4 cylinder and the other is a 2 stroke 2 cylinder. Both normally will do 60+ mph. After filling them up with gas they both idled fine but the power was horrible. Once finally planed off, they would spit and sputter and barely reach 30 mph.
We thought it was bad gas so we called the station and carefully explained the situation without accusations. They explained that their pumps have electronic sensors that monitor the fuel quality and they hadn’t received any complaints recently.
I pulled both plugs in the 2 stroke motor and they were fouled so I replaced them and used some fuel stabilizer. That fixed that jet ski.
The 4 stroke motor did not have fouled plugs and they looked perfect with the proper gaps. This motor will not rev like it should and stops about 3k rpms short of redline. It has a learner mode but it’s disabled. Redlines in reverse but not forward. Any ideas what’s wrong?
You need to drain the fuel and re-fuel with gas you know to be good. Change your filter also if equipped. I don’t know what models you have, but system cleaning is probably in order also. Check your fuel can if you used one.
There are several possibilities here. If there was water in the fuel, you will see it at the bottom of the tank. Almost every gas station in the world has some water in their tanks. Their fuel could also have been near empty and you sucked up crap, or if they just filled their tanks the crap was suspended and you got it. Check the bottom of the tank when you drain it. You may need to remove and flush the tanks. There is often major performance problems during the change in seasons because fuel changes. Different butane levels are used depending on your location. Winter fuel in norther climates will run very hot and cause vapor problems if used in the summer as an example. That shouldn’t be a problem this time of year unless it was very old fuel. There may have been a greater than 10% alcohol level in the fuel. If you have fuel injection, this can mess with the sensors. You can test what is in your tank for this. Put 100 cc in a tube and add 10cc of water. If the water line is greater than 10cc, that is the amount of alcohol in the fuel above 10%. I have also seen gas cut with diesel fuel. This used to be very common as diesel was much cheaper than gas. You can smell this in the tank. It lowers the flame speed and will reduce your performance.
Fuel tampering was real common during the last gas crunch so I’m not surprised if you run into this now and then. Money is money and some station owners are greedy slime. It gets to be a big problem on smaller motors tuned for performance and I have seen many cases of damaged engines and fuel system parts.
You may wish to save some of the fuel you remove. If everything works great after you change fuel and clean the system, then you know where the finger points. The state regulates fuel quality and you can get the sample tested. I know people who have gotten paid back for their repairs caused by bad gas. It’s just tough to prove.
