the body shop broke my wheel lock key…what can i do?
when it comes to cars, i am clueless so when they told me to get nuts for my wheels, i went to autozone and just told them to pick them out for me. well, they gave me dorman 12×1.5 spline drive wheel locks…so the shop put four locks on EACH wheel. well, apparently the key couldn’t handle all of that pressure and it bent it…
so now i am in desperate need of new tires and an alignment…and i’m 500 miles away from my hometown. i have one week to get a solution.
the part number is 711-355. maybe this will be of help when it comes to finding the right key to the locks…
If the shop broke your key, it is their responibility to help you fix the problem. Since you didn’t buy the equipment from them, you will need to go back to Auto Zone and buy a new key so you can get your wheels off – then take the bill to the shop and make them reimburse you for it (it’s their legal obligation – don’t let them tell you it’s not their responsibility and don’t take no for an answer).
Also, it sounds like you already know this, but you don’t need 4 locks on each wheel, you only need 1 per wheel. If the shop convinced you to get 4 locks per wheel, or if they installed all of them without asking you if you wanted 4 per wheel, then they are ripping you off and you need to never go there again.
The auto industry is rampant with sharks, from the smallest shacks to the shiniest dealers – always be on the defensive with them. They will respond to pressure, so if you feel like you’re getting ripped off then thoughen up with them – they may fight you for a bit but don’t let yourself get taken for a ride!
