Three Top Rotary Laser Level Design Features To Look For
The rotary laser level has transformed the construction industry and building trades. Levels are available in different sizes and specifications from a number of suppliers. But what are the essential features one should look out for when deciding on a laser level. There are several distinct types of laser level for different facets of construction. They all have the basic leveling function but add to this single and dual grade capability, horizontal and vertical operation and beam down features to name just a few. But we will be considering here the basic leveling devices commonly used for external work. However these tips are equally relevant to other types of laser and those for internal operation.
Tip 1:- Automatic leveling feature
This is probably the most important feature you are looking for. You need to be able to take the level from its case mount it on a tripod, set it roughly level and press the button. The rotary level must then do the rest for you and fine tune its attitude to set itself level before starting. It is also key that the instrument has a enough self-leveling range of at least {+}/- 5 degrees and is able to auto correct during operation.
Tip 2:- Out of level alert
There must be an audible out of level alert so that you are made aware if the equipment has been disturbed. This is essential as you will be working away from the equipment and do not want to have to keep on walking back and forth to check if all is OK.
Tip 3:- Basic single button operation
It is essential that operation of the rotary laser level is easy with minimum margin for error. For basic levels this should be a single button operation. For grade lasers there needs to be simple big button operation and clear instructions. The test here is that you should be able to take the equipment out of its case set it on a tripod and use it even if you have never seen the make/model before.
Extra related considerations.
You must have a reliable receiver. A receiver (rod eye) is the sensor that senses the laser signal. It is attached to a rod or pole at a set height governed by the relative height of the laser and the feature being checked for level. The rod is placed on the feature being checked and the rod eye receiver will sound differing tones to denote high,low and level. It is preferable to have a receiver that is matched to the rotary laser level. Some are sold with the laser level as part of a package.
It is also preferable that the rotary laser level, rod eye receiver and accessories are provided with a storage/carrying case. These are sensitive pieces of equipment. OK they are engineered to work in the hostile construction environment, but they are still precision instruments and should be protected when not in use. Being able to store everything in a sectioned padded case means that transportation is easy and it is less likely that items will be lost.
There are many different types of rotary laser level available on the market so it is worth considering the options.
