Can i glue green wood together and have good results?
ok, first off, what im trying to do…
i want to make a didgeridoo (that’s a kind of musical instrument, basically a hollow wooden tube) out of a black walnut tree branch.
the only way ill be able to hollow it out with the tools i have access to is to cut it into short segments, drill each segment out with a hole saw bit, then glue it back together after its been drilled.
now, what im wondering is, if i were to glue it before the wood is completely dried out, would it hold? or would the pieces warp away from each other upon drying out and fall apart? i already removed the bark, and its a few days old, so some of the moisture is gone.
if its not a good idea at this point, how long would it take for the wood to dry enough to glue?
The wet wood will shrink up and split, putting glue in the picture will make a joint that will not shrink at the same rate as the other parts of the item making the splitting an even bigger problem. The wood will take a long time to air dry to the degree needed for your purpose but can be done in an oven in a few hours. What need to do is to find someone who has a horizontal boring machine.
