Guide On How To Buy A Good Used Camper Trailer
Buying a camper trailer can be a duanting task if you are not sure what to look for, so it is important that you do research so you get one that meets all of your needs. There is a lot to consider. I will give you 5 critical things you need to consider when buying a used camper trailer.
Tip 1
The first and most critical thing to consider is how much weight can your car tow. If you only have a small car, you will need to restrict the size and weight of the camper trailer you buy to match. The other alternative is to get a bigger car such as a 4wd, especially if you want to go off road, but that adds another cost to your decision making.
The easiest way to determine if your car can tow a particular trailer, check the gross weight of the trailer, and include an estimate of what the weight will be when fully laden. Next, check the gross towing weight of the car which should be listed in the cars owner manual. Make sure you have some to spare.
Tip 2
Check the exterior and interior for leaks. The last thing you need is to wake up to water dripping on your face. The best way to find leaks is to look for water marks and water stains on the inside of the camper trainer. These are tell tale signs that there is a leak. Also look for pooling of water on the exterior. Check rubber seals to make sure they are not perishing as this is an easy way for water to penetrate into the camper.
Tip 3
Check all the electrical and gas connections. It can be difficult to check the fridge if it has not been switched on in advance as they can take a long time to cool down. Therefore, contact the owner well before you arrive and get them to switch the fridge on. That way you will get a good idea if it is functioning properly. If you are really serious about a particular camper, you should get someone qualified to thoroughly check the electrical and gas systems.
Tip 4
Check for rust and other mechanical problems. This area is often overlooked, as most attention is given to the inside of the camper. It is recommended to get a motor vehicle inspection specialist to give the camper trailer a complete check. They will check for rust, problems with tyres, structural damage, and many other things are included on their check list. A check like this will give you piece of mind.
Tip 5
Finally, determine if the camper trailer is suitable for your needs. This is important. If you are going off road a lot, is the camper build up to 4wd standard? Is the storage capacity adequate for what you need? If you are going off road for extended periods, is the fridge able to be run on gas? If not you could run out of battery power. If you are not sure, the best option is to hire a camper trailer for a trip and test it out.
