Paiste- The Paiste Percussion Company
There are numerous manufacturers and supplier of percussion instruments. Paiste is a Swiss designer and manufacturer of metal percussion such as cymbals and gongs. Paiste is the world’s third largest manufacturer of percussion instruments and endorsed by many professional drummers included Eric Carr from Kiss and Nick Mason from Pink Floyd. The business began in 1906 with the founder Toomas Paiste. His instrument repair shop was known for making custom orders. The company makes hand and drum cymbals as well as gongs. Other percussion instruments made by the company include crotales, sound plates, sound discs, roto sounds and finger cymbals.
The business continues to be family owned. Paiste states its philosophy as a continuous quest to create new sounds with cymbals, gongs and bronze percussion instruments for the creative needs of drummers and percussionists. Unlike other companies, Paiste makes its cymbals by hand. They start with a master cymbal to base all others one to ensure quality. The firing department uses visual inspection to make sure the cymbals are uniform and flawless. The hammering department uses a pneumatic hammer to give the cymbals their shape and use a hammer and anvil to fine-tune the cymbal’s shape.
The company’s other departments are lathing, quality control and the finishing department. Paiste’s lathing department reduces the thickness of the cymbal and uses micrometer measurements to ensure the correct thickness. The quality control department checks products against reference cymbal to make sure all cymbals have the correct parameters. This department also hand-tests each manufactured cymbal against the master cymbal. If it does not meet the company’s high standards, it is destroyed. The finishing department smoothes the cymbal’s edges, silk-screen band images on the product and applies a coating made of a special protective solution to prevent oxidation.
The company is inventive. The Paiste Company has numerous credits to its inventions. Paiste was the first company to more than one class of cymbal quality. The first to use Chinese style cymbals in a drum set. The company invented the wavy hi-hat, bottom cymbal, sound edge. The company was also the first to use color-coated cymbals in the early ‘80s. Paiste also offer percussion instruments made of their signature bronze alloy. In 2001, the company introduced an inventive sonic texture formula that enhances the cymbal’s sound. With all the years of experience and innovative ideas the company had become a leader in the sale of percussion instruments in the U.S. and other countries.
