Plated Hexagon
A possible light shield?
I have a potential way of creating a shield made out of light. I am unsure of the actual science behind it, so I will call it a preliminary theory.
What if you could somehow manipulate the photons of light into a solid barrier? Firstly, you have an outline of a wire hexagon, made of electromagnetic metal that binds light within (Unless EM waves cannot affect photons in this manner). As photons have no mass, you would need to give them mass (unsure of how to do this, but perhaps this might solidify them and give them solid properties) and bind them within the wire hexagon. The electromagnetic plates would ensnare the now solid photons to act as a shield.
Is this a feasible defense after all or does it make no sense whatsoever?

Or you could just make a shield out of something much more conventionally solid, like steel or lexan.
What would be the advantage of your light shield? Presumably it might have a few disadvantages, like being expensive and consuming a lot of power. Maybe the advantage is that it’s “light” – as in, easy to carry, while still being quite strong.
Well, if you give the photons mass, then the shield isn’t quite so light any more. Even though at any moment the photons might be flying through the air, at some point the shield has to “catch” them, and the net effect will be you have to hold up the mass of the shield against gravity. It’s similar to the “box of bees” problem. If you have a box of bees, even if they are flying inside the box, you feel the weight of the bees.
Actually photons do have a tiny mass for the purpose of being affected by gravity and momentum. So you don’t necessarily have to give the photons mass. Actually you can affect the momentum of a photon; it’s related to its frequency, but that wouldn’t be much help. The momentum is proportional to the energy, so for the same energy consumption, you can choose to have more photons with less energy and momentum each, or less photons with more energy and momentum each. In any case, you probably want to use visible light for your shield, because lower frequencies like radio waves and higher frequencies like gamma rays tend to pass through a lot of stuff. So that limits your choice of frequency anyway. But even if you choose visible light, some clever person is probably going to figure out it works pretty well to attack you with a glass bullet or sword.
What’s the principle of operation of your shield anyway? Is the light supposed to deflect an attack with its momentum, or vaporize the attacker’s weapon with its energy? I suggest you rely on the energy, because light is not particularly advantageous for its momentum. You’d be better off to use a low-tech steel shield for that. However light is great for having a lot of energy in the minimum amount of mass. You are going to need pretty powerful output though to vaporize stuff in an instant.
Good luck, though, Dr. Mad Scientist. In principle I think your device can work if you can figure out how not to have energy loss as the photons go back and forth across your shield.
