The advancement to Modern Plumbing
The word Plumbing came from the Latin word plumbum which means lead as lead was once a material used for pipes.
Approximately 1720 BC the Minoan Palace of Knossos on the Isle of Crete waste drainage system was built, four drainage systems connected to a large sewer build from stone. The first clean water supply was made from Terra Cotta pipe and connected to faucets made from gold, silver and marble that supplied cold and hot water.
3700 years later plumbing has advanced greatly. Modern hot water pipes are usually made from copper and cold water pipes are usually made from PVC (polyvinyl chloride). Modern storm water and sewage lines are made from PVC however some houses today still have clay or earthenware pipes.
The modern day Plumber is a trade’s person, who works with pipes, plumbing fixtures, water drainage, waste drainage and water systems. There are a couple of different sectors of the Plumbing industry today.
The maintenance plumber’s main role is to repair and maintain residential, commercial and industrial plumbing, the main activities include clearing blocked drains, repairing damaged pipes or relaying pipes, repairing or installing hot water systems, kitchen plumbing, bathroom plumbing, fixing water leaks, repairing and installing gas piping, installing or repairing guttering and downpipes and pipe relocation.
The maintenance plumbers tools and equipment usually include a high pressure water jetter for clearing blocked drains, a cctv drain camera to inspect and diagnose drainage problems, a locator for the cctv drain camera to locate where the problem is from the surface, hack saw to PVC pipe, pipe cutter to cut copper pipe, water pressure gauge to measure water pressure, concrete saws to cut concrete and access pipes underground, jack hammers to break up concrete to access pipes underground, ladders for accessibility, drills & hole saws to allow pipe access.
A new building plumber will lay new pipes and install all necessary plumbing fixtures this includes pipes from the bathroom, kitchen and laundry. Installation of cold and hot water supply, the septic system, water drainage, showers, baths, sinks, taps, dishwashers, hot water heaters and washing machines.
The building plumbers tools and equipment mainly include pipe cutting saws, hole cutters, tube benders, water pressure gauges, laser levels and measurers, hole saws and ladders for accessibility.
Make sure your plumber is using the right equipment to get the job done properly and quickly so you’re not paying for more labour.
