Were Pipe Organs Brass instruments?
There is one stop used on one particular organ that produces its sound the same way brass instruments do. The organ is the instrument in the Melbourne Town Hall, Australia, and the stop is called a ‘Diaphone’. [This 'Diaphone' was invented as a fog horn, and it produces a huge amount of brassy noise. It is not universally loved...]
Apart from this, the pipe organ is a ‘woodwind’ instrument, some stops working on the ‘flute’ principle, others on the ‘reed’ principle. These ‘reed’ stops are sometimes reasonably good imitations of trumpets, though. Perhaps that’s why you wondered if the organ is a ‘brass’ instrument?
Edit… The Melbourne Diaphone (H.N.B, 1928) is at 32, 16, 8, and 4, or was when I played it last. [A jet airliner makes less noise.]
Schantz rebuilt this organ a few years ago, and I think they restored the Diaphone. Poor Melbourne!
There was a 32′ reed at the conclusion of one or two [tasteless] variations on the youtube e.g. provided by Alberich. I imagine it is an Ophecleide installed by Schantz. Were it the Diaphone, I imagine there would be no doubt about it!
Similarly, I feel the big reeds on the manuals are Tubas rather than the Diaphones.
