How to avoid wrinkles in pipe bends?
we are bending pipes using induction hot bending tech. , during forming of 24″ pipes wrinckles appear in the starting point of the bendign , any recommendations?
In many instances wrinkles cannot be avoided. It becomes more difficult to supress wrinkles the larger the diameter of pipe. Since 24″ is quite large the odds are against you.
However you may want to still try some methods that are used on smaller pipe. One way is to use a shaped surface with the same radius as your inside of the desired bend. This will help to prevent unnecessary folding on the inside of the bend.
Another method I have heard of but have yet to try is to fill the pipe with sand, cap it, then heat and bend. Since the sand has a set volume, the pipe must stay cylindrical to maintain the volume.
Also consider that when the pipe isn’t wrinkling the opposing side is elongating, thus making it thinner and less structurally resilient.
