Truck Insurance Policy Options For Independent Haulers
Working as an independent owner/operator in the commercial trucking industry can be a great thing. You get a greater amount of freedom than if you were working directly for a large-scale company.
Unfortunately, that freedom comes at a price. You may end up sacrificing employer-provided benefits. Of these benefits, truck insurance is one of the most important.
As an independent, the company that has contracted you will most likely provide you with primary liability coverage. This coverage pays for the cost of damages and injuries sustained in accidents. Coverage amounts vary, though, and you may want to consider adding additional coverage if the company policy is not enough.
While independents are often covered under their contract employer’s primary liability truck insurance, their own gear may not be protected. Additionally, they’ll need commercial truck insurance to cover the times of the year they aren’t on the job.
Some types of coverage independents should be aware of are:
Physical Damage
When you are involved in an accident and are at fault, your primary liability insurance policy will not cover the cost to fix your truck. This burden falls to you unless you have a specialized form of truck insurance called physical damage insurance.
Physical damage truck insurance covers your personal losses in the event of an accident, regardless of fault. This coverage also extends to damage caused by fires, vandalism, and even theft. Some policies also cover limited damage to trailers and cargo.
Non-Trucking Liability Or Bobtail Insurance
Once you have completed your haul, you are no longer considered to be acting in service of your contracted employer. Your liability coverage, therefore, is no longer valid.
In this case, you need to be covered off the job, but not on the job. Non-trucking liability covers you in those off times without forcing you to buy a full primary liability policy for yourself. You only pay truck insurance premiums for the time you are not otherwise covered.
