How to get rid of nerves for driving test?
My driver’s license test is coming up this morning. This is the second time I’ve tried to get my license. The first time, I failed immediately because of the parallel parking (the only thing I did run was pull into the space too far from the cones, so I was over the white line even though the car was straight).
Since I failed the first time, I am incredibly nervous for the second, and while practicing last night, I kept feeling like I was going to hit the curb or just do something wrong. On my practice tries I got it in the slot just fine but fairly close to the line on the driver’s side. Are they any tips for me to settle my nerves because I just keep seeing myself screwing it up like before in my mind. Any advice?
Re-taking a driving test is a horrible thing (I passed second time so I know how you feel). You also feel like every little mistake is being scrutinized, and thinks makes you more nervous. To make my second test worse, I found I had the same examiner as first time: it was even more thrilling, therefore, when I passed.
Some things to try: if the examiner makes you nervous, try to picture her/him wearing no clothes – they are human!
Think as you are going through about everything that you have done correctly: every time you indicate, look in the mirror, change gear, keep thinking ‘Yep, did that right’. Perhaps you could try, before the parallel parking manoeuvre, just counting slowly backwards from 10, just to get your mind empty, and then focus on the job in hand.
Good luck – and if you don’t pass this time, you will when the time is right. You’ll feel much better out on the road on your own when you know you can handle the car properly without help.
