The Complete Pepper Spray Buyer’s Guide (Part 3) – How to Buy the Best One For You
Welcome back! So far, you have learned the difference between MACE and other pepper spray brands. You are also knowledgeable on how to adjust the pepper spray strength to your specific needs, using OC Concentrations and SHU ratings as selection criteria. On top of that, you also know the different types of spraying methods (“fogger”, “stream”, “forced cone”, “foam” and “gel” ) and which one of them is the most appropriate for you, given your individual lifestyle.
Is your pepper spray buying knowledge complete? Certainly not. Not until you learn the difference between Tear Gas and Pepper Spray. “Why is that so important?”, you might ask. Well, in some cases, the difference between life and death might depend on which one of those you choose. That’s why such an important topic is one of the main objectives of this third – and last – installment of our pepper spray buyers guide articles.
But that’s not all! We’ll also review what UV Dye is, and whether or not free shipping exists when you buy defensive sprays online. It is only after you learn all that that you can consider your pepper spray buying knowledge to be truly complete (assuming you’ve already read the two previous articles). So, let’s get started!
What’s the difference between Tear Gas and Pepper Spray? The core difference is that pepper spray is an inflammatory weapon, not an irritant like tear gas. Unlike tear gas, pepper devices do not rely on pain infliction to be effective. Pepper sprays rely more on creating inflammatory reactions such as temporary blindness, breathing difficulties, coughing and muscle spasms. Thanks to that, pepper sprays will always work (no matter if the attacker is on drugs, drunk or is unusually impervious to pain).
The same cannot be said about irritants like tear gas, though. Irritants rely more on pain infliction to be effective. Because sensitivity to pain may be greatly decreased in drugged aggressors, tear gas may or may not be effective in those dangerous situations. In other words, you will not be able to predict the outcome of your self defense attempt by using tear gas alone, because you will never know beforehand whether or not an adversary will be under the influence of drugs. Irritants (tear gas) will work mainly on non-drugged individuals.
The conclusion? Pepper sprays are more reliable when compared to tear gas. Pepper sprays can protect you against all kinds of attackers (tear gas can’t). Because of that, we do not recommend any sprays whose exclusive component is tear gas. In our opinion, tear gas is acceptable only when OC pepper is also included as one of the main ingredients: although tear gas alone has the aforementioned limitations, it is indeed an excellent complement to pepper sprays because of its added effects on the aggressor.
“OK, now that I know the difference, I am finally ready to buy the pepper spray that’s best for me, right?”, you might think. Not so fast. Remember that there is still another pepper spray feature to be reviewed: What is UV Dye?
UV Dye (or “Ultra-Violet” dye) is an invisible (and not easily washed off) chemical that may help police officers identify your attacker in case he is apprehended. Some Mace brand and Wildfire models are excellent examples of these. Is it completely necessary? Not exactly. You can do without it. However, its importance cannot be undermined. How much do you want that assailant behind bars, unable to bother you and your family again anytime soon? Ask yourself that, and you’ll understand what we mean.
One last question: “Can I get free shipping on pepper sprays?”. Although no retailer (at least that we know of) offers such a thing, our advice is to always choose a retailer that offers you low s&h fees instead of a flat rate exclusively. Why?
Flat rates offers you the chance of saving money when you buy multiple items at the same time. That means that no matter how many items you buy, the flat s&h fee will always remain the same. Great retailers always let you win: they offer you a flat rate fee when that works to your advantage (because it lowers your s&h costs)…but they also offer you a more flexible s&h fee (not a flat rate) when that helps you save money on single items that are lighter and easier to ship (pepper sprays, personal alarms, some stun guns, etc.).
For instance, a retailer with an inflexible flat rate will charge you between $7 to $9 dollars when you buy an $8.95 pepper spray. That means you will end up paying almost the same amount you paid for your pepper spray, in s&h fees alone! However, at the time of this writing, a $8.95 pepper spray would only cost you $2.89 in s&h fees when you buy from a flexible merchant, NOT NINE dollars! Yes: $2.89 is much better, isn’t it?
Before you buy, remember to check whether or not defensive sprays are legal in your area. Most retailers will provide you a “Pepper Sprays Laws” section: don’t forget to visit it. While maybe one particular spray will not be allowed in the state you live in, in many cases other sprays will be permitted (for instance, Michigan citizens can buy only certain types of pepper sprays that are labeled as “Michigan Approved”). If by any chance pepper sprays are not allowed in your area, there are still plenty of other options to choose from (for instance, a TASER device, a stun gun or a personal alarm).
No matter what non lethal weapon you choose, don’t ever forget that self defense is your right. Pepper sprays are a great and very effective way of defending yourself and your loved ones. And that’s a fact.

Yes, you have learned a lot by now, and you must be congratulated for your interest in your own safety and that of your loved ones. You might truly be sparing yourself a lot of trouble and pain in the future just by learning and acting on the knowledge that you have just acquired.
