What type of sander would be best to use to sand down a deck before refinishing it?
My son and his bride to be just purchased a house and it has a fairly sizable deck, perhaps about 500 sq. ft. It really needs to be refinished and would require a good sanding. What sort of sander should be used? Belt sander, random orbital sander or what? I believe a clear finish / preservative will be used to help make it water-resistant.
What they need to do is to rent a floor sander. However, in my experience, sanding a deck is somewhat fruitless. If the deck is simply old and tired looking, a pressure washer may be the best answer. It will spiff an old-looking deck up in a hurry. If you can get the decking down to bare wood, a sealer with UV inhibitors is your best bet. Behr, sold at Home Depot makes the best one I have seen. DO NOT USE THOMPSONS WATER SEAL ON A DECK. Thompsons will repel water but will do absolutely nothing to protect the wood from UV rays, which is the main reason a deck goes bad. The Behr sealer/stain can be installed in a natural color or stained to nearly any color your little heart desires. If the decking boards are split and the grain is separated, no amount of sanding will solve that. New decking is in order. It can be done by a homeowner as it isn’t difficult. Install the new decking with screws, not nails. If the decking is pressure treated, use ceramic coated screws. However, I will warn you that many times, the framing underneath bad decking is also in need of replacement. If that is the case, it may be time to call in a contractor. Good luck to them.
