Last night I dreamed the world came to an end
And only you and I were left behind
I looked up to your face at eyes so kind
We’d need to find a shelter, we would fend
My will and yours would have to twist and bend
Together now our resources combined
And thoughts of yesterday lurked in my mind
Of messages I wrote but could not send

And then I woke to morning streaming in
I tried to wipe the sequence from my brain
While listening to the sound of heavy rain
The squirrels throwing nuts; a noisy din
I looked toward my phone, yet did refrain
As remnants of my dream washed down the drain

The end of days has come, and we survived
The grim apocalypse that scoured the land
And now, before the toppled towers stand
And ken our finest moment has arrived.
It was for total privacy we strived
And this is total! More than we had planned!
At last, no other lives to own your hand.
I think I am a cat now, many-lived
And seemingly immune to falling wrong.
I have my one true love, and yes a world
That scarred, embattled, ashen-gray, and dead
Yet has its green spots and its robin-song,
Its blackened hillocks by your grace empearled…
There is no place I’d rather be instead.
