How to stain Pine boards to look like Maple?

OK I’m building a storage bin for a local business and they want it to match the rest of there displays which are a maple veneered, but they could only afford to make it all out of pine. in my small town we only have a Home Depot and a Wal-mart so I’m really limited, is there a stain or a combination of stains that will make it look as close to maple as possible?

Well, you can stain the pine with a stain that’s the *color* of maple wood, but the grain of the pine will still show through (and be different than the grain that maple wood has because pine grain is quite distinctive).

Also, be aware that before staining a *soft* wood like pine, you’ll definitely want to put on a “sealer” of some kind (ask at a paint dept) to close up a lot of the porosity and allow a stain to look more or less even (otherwise, soft woods will absorb a stain differently in different areas and look really blotchy).

The only other alternative I know of to try and match the look of the maple furniture already there would be to create a “faux maple” finish (on any kind of wood) — to create a faux maple finish would involve first painting the bare wood with a shade of reddish-brown *paint* (paints are opaque, not transparent like a stain), then using various kinds of brushes and implements to drag a darker brown stain onto the brown paint to simulate the grain of maple.
