Lumber Connectors

What is it CALLED?! Connector?
Okay, please tell me the technical name of this. I want to connect two pieces of lumber (2×8) end to end. You can put a metal ‘plate’ on the back side, and bolt it on to each piece of wood, holding them together, what is this called? Help!
An example is truss construction which typically joins end to end lumber using a gusset plate on both sides.
