Hoists are mechanical apparatus that are used to lift or lower loads. Originally, hoists were operated manually. This was done with help of pulley or block and tackle systems. However, with the development of engines, hoists now use a motor for power. The origin of hoists goes a long way in history. Earlier, these were used to move loads that people were not capable of moving independently. With the help of electric hoists, it became possible to move such objects easily.
Electric hoists use electric power to lift and lower objects. These hoists are produced by a large number of manufacturers and can easily be obtained in hardware stores and even on the Internet. Today, hoists find immense use in industry and engineering. In order to operate these hoists, it is necessary to plug them into an electrical system or even use an electrical generator to run it. There are chiefly two types of electrical hoists – electric rope hoists and electric chain hoists. Higher rated hoists use chains for lifting, as they are stronger than wire hoists.
A hoist is usually operable only in the vertical dimension. However, it can be moved side ways as well. For this purpose, it is necessary to mount a hoist on a crossbeam. Such hoists are typically seen at warehouses and yards where heavy goods need to be lifted and moved from one place to another. Some electric hoists can even perform multiple tasks like pulling a heavy object before lifting it. Such devices are more adaptable and suitable to the tough industrial working environments.
It is possible to operate the hoist remotely with the help of a switch. It is very important for the hoist company as well as the hoist operators to be aware of the safety norms for the operation of these devices. Some of the safety norms include positioning of the load in a proper manner to reduce the risk of injury caused by falling loads. Other safety measures also include regulating the presence of people near the lifting area, as multiple people may be involved in the lifting of loads. Thus, electric hoists are important devices in industrial use in the present days. There are other types of hoists also, which include pneumatic hoists and hydraulic hoists. However, electric hoists are more popular since the other types of hoists only find use in exclusive situations.
