Ideal football position for my body type?
I’m 17, 5’8″, and weigh 165 lbs with 10% body fat at the moment. Since I was little I had people tell me I should play football. I was a late bloomer and never really got into my high school’s football program. I ran the 100m and threw discus for four years in high school and have really strong legs for my size. I can squat 3 plates on each side and have leg pressed 990 lbs. My upper body is lagging with a max bench of around 200 lbs but these past few months I’ve been making great gains. I can easily grab the rim of a basketball court and did a t-drill with the football team once for fun and came out with one of the fastest times. If my gains stay consistent I should be around 180 lbs next year. I sometimes feel like my size is the only thing holding me back. Hopefully this info helps. Also, what are average sizes for college level players in the positions that you stated? Thanks.
If everything you say is true, you could be an asset as a free or strong safety.
Hopefully you will get a bit of a growth spurt and hit 5’10″ or 5’11″, if not, you have an uphill battle my friend.
There are some 5’9″ safeties in college football, quite a few actually. As for the NFL, if that is your ultimate goal, that’s a different story. I think that there are 2 under 5’10″.
So you are 17, in your Senior year? If you are on your school’s football team now you may be able to apply for scholarship to NCAA schools.
If not, you will be looking at trying to walk on at a junior college or Div II or Div. III school.
To let you know, Div. III and JuCos do not have athletic scholarships.
You also have to keep the grades up. 2.0 to be on the team, 2.2 to be able to play. JuCo.
Junior College coaches are a very good judge of talent and usually will take the time and give an evaluation, even for someone not enrolled at their school.
Talk to your coaches, they are your way in.
