Sizing Hollow Metal Doors and Frames

Security is vital aspect for all residential, commercial or institutional and door plays an important role in achieving the security. There are many kinds of doors available in market for both residential as well as commercial place security, like Hollow Metal Doors, Commercial Wood Doors, Glass and Aluminum Doors, Revolving Doors, Bullet Resistant Doors, Door Access Controllers, Overhead Doors, etc. However, out of these all Hollow Metal Doors and frames can be designed to be weather and bug resistant. Nowadays, when an opening needs strength, security as well as durability or maximum fire resistance in any combination, steel doors and frames provide the qualities to meet these needs. Further determine the size of Hollow Metal Doors and Frames is also vital. Usually manufacturer of hollow metal doors and hollow metal frames pursue standards of the standard steel doors and frames for modular masonry construction which is set by Steel Door Institute. As we know that door and frame are the platform on which the total opening is built we must be careful for deciding its sizes; however, these often cause the most difficult problems. Hollow metal doors and frames are usually comes in nominal sizes, in which a door measuring 3′ wide and 7′ tall would be listed as 3070. To achieve the successful installation knowledge of size determination is necessary.

Hollow Metal Frames Sizing: In the first step you need to determine that which type of wall the frame will be installed into. Usually in drywall partitions, the frame should measure 1″ smaller than the wall opening in both height and width; in case of a masonry wall, the frame should be 2″ smaller than the opening.

You also need to observe the building plans to determine how the frames should be installed because hollow metal frames can either wrap around a wall or butt up against it. Moreover, calculate the jamb depth of the frame. If the frame will be butted, it should have a jamb depth equal to the thickness of the wall. If it will be wrapped, it should measure 1″ wider than the wall. The jamb depth on masonry frames will always be measured in 1/4″ increments, while drywall frames will always be measured in 1/8″ increments.

Hollow Metal Doors Sizing: It should be 1/8″ smaller than the frame across the width of the door. This allows for 1/16″ clearance on each side so the door can swing in the opening without interference. As per the height of the door they are typically sized 3/4″ to 7/8″ smaller than the frame in terms of height which allows for 1/8″ clearance at the top of the opening, and 5/8″ to 3/4″ at the bottom.

In the second step consider pairs of doors. In case of installing a pair of door in a single frame is sized slightly differently. Each door should be undersized 3/4″ to 7/8″ according to the information in step 2.

So, by determining the size of the hollow metal doors and frames you can minimize the risks of large gaps between the doors, which can create problems with keeping the doors closed and locked.
