What is India/Bangladesh/ other high-density countries doing about Population Control?
Aren’t India and other high-density population countries worried about their population size?
If there is any shift in climate, rains, or environment that affects farming, the human starvation toll would be catastrophic.
I’m from Bangladesh and all I can say is that our population control programme that started since early 1980s is not very affective here, but said to be better than India and Pakistan.
Population growth in Bangladesh declined from 3 percent to 2.3 percent between 1961 and 1981. The government of Bangladesh once claimed that we have achieved below 2.0% (1.88%) population growth rate and the dictator President General Ershad bagged some prize from the UN, but later the decline was found not sustainable one.
The fertility rate is now 3.1 children per woman, compared with 6.2 some fifty years ago (in early 1960s) when the then Pakistan started with the campaign of ‘family planning’ and Bangladesh was East Pakistan where God fearing population gave lukewarm reception to such campaigning.
Recent (2005-2007) estimates of Bangladesh’s population suggests range from 142 to 159 million, making it the 7th most populous nation in the world with a land area of 144,000 square kilometers, ranked 94th, the population density is remarkable.
The population is relatively young, with the 0–25 age group comprising 60%, while 3% are 65 or older. Life expectancy is 63 years for both males and females. Presently there is no sense of urgency to curb this silent danger that would wipe out people like Tsunami.
We need one-child per family to be implemented the way the Chinese government did about 30 years ago and they are having the result at present times. Though there are many pitfalls in that policy but people can be pulled out of poverty and can make a comparatively decent living then the way it is now. But who will bell the cat? That is the question and we all are slowly inching towards disaster just for the reason that the population is already beyond manageable size awaiting calamity.
