Do I need to re-dig concrete forms (sauna tubes) before our new deck is poured?
Currently have a wooden deck on top of a concrete slab, the wooden deck is held up by two 8×8 posts on sauna tubes…have no idea if they are dug deep enough. I do know however, that our concrete deck is heaving and needing to be repoured. Can I put the posts directly on the slab or should I re-dig the concrete forms and make sure they are deep enough?
It depends to a degree on the loading of the posts. 8 x 8 posts are huge — I would not have expected posts that large to support a deck; 4 x 4 is typical. If the slab is at least 6 inches thick in the vicinity of where the posts will sit, and a minimum of 4 inches elsewhere with wire reinforcement, you can probably get by without replacing the Sonotube bases. Add an extra two inches, and you will certainly be okay.
