thermal pad?
hi i bought a boxed intel core 2 quad Q6600 cpu 
and it didnt come wiht a compound/grease there was just some grey looking stuff on the bottom of it.
is this a “thermal pad” and is it better than thermal grease.
or do i still need to apply some grease on it???
also i bought a zalman 7700 alcu which designed for p-4 and is compatible with core 2 duo.
i asked my local pc guy is it safe with a core 2 Q and he said yeh, p-4 is hotter than c2q so it will be fine.
is that true?
and is the grey looking stuff on my cpu fan a thermal pad?

First — Yes, the gray pad you see is also called the thermal pad. Honestly, thermal paste such as Arctic Silver would be a much better thermal conductor. If I were you, I’d take a plastic card (driver’s license or an old credit card work well) and scrape off the thermal pad and apply a small amount of thermal paste directly onto the CPU (not onto the heatsink). Q-Tips work well for the thermal paste application.
Second — Pentium 4′s definitely run hotter than the C2D’s. Partly because they’re older technology, have a larger core (90nm core vs 65nm core C2D’s and some 45nm CD2′s) and they require a higher core voltage than the more modern Core 2 Duo processors.
The Zalman 7700 should cool your Q6600 just fine.
