Gal Pail
I have some chickens and I can’t figure out why they aren’t laying like they should.?
I have a flock of 40 Rhode Island Red hens. I got them this past spring and I don’t know why they aren’t laying eggs. I am only getting about 7 eggs a day. They are in a pole shed where they do get some sun exposure. I am feeding them the same fed that I fed chickens from past years. The diet consists of 5 scoops cracked corn, 1 scoop 16% poultry layer, one tin can of oyster shells per 5 gal. bucket. I feed around half a 5 gal. pail per day. I do chores about 3:00 in the afternoon. I have been raising chickens for years so I don’t know what is happening. Any insight from people with experience would be appreciated. Thank you
Diet and nutrition are the two main factors in egg production. It sounds like their diet is just fine, so I don’t think that’s a problem. Plenty of protein and calcium is necessary for good egg production.
You didn’t say how old they are. Were they pullets or chicks when you bought them? Rhode Islands tend to peak with their production around age 2-3 and it declines after that. If you bought these birds as adults, their seller may have been retiring them, as they may be getting past their laying prime. If they’re young, they may not be old enough to lay steadily. Some of my layers didn’t start producing until nearly 8 months of age, and it takes up to a year for some to be steady, everyday layers.
And some breeds slow or cease egg production this time of year. Egg production has a lot to do with daylight hours. Chickens sometimes stop laying when they’re not getting 8 hours of daylight each day, which often happens during winter months. You can trick them into production by leaving lights on in their shed after dark, giving them minimum 8 hours a day of light.
If possible, have you considered keeping a rooster? Rhode Islands can be nasty and mean boys, but a young cockeral may be a good method of encouraging productive laying habits with your girls. Especially with larger flocks, the introduction of a rooster seems to create competition with the girls. Everyone wants his attention and being productive is a way of doing it.
Other breeds tend to be more reliable producers than Rhode Islands. They are a good breed, but if you want solid year round egg production, I swear by buffs and barred rocks. I did alot of research prior to investing in layers and all research pointed to those two breeds. Both are old breeds and solid dual purpose birds, known for decent meat production and year round egg reliability. You might want to consider introducing some to your flock in the future.
