What can I use to repair the slide on my Springfield XDM?

It has a scratch on the front of the slide (which is black by the way). It is forged steel with a melonite finish.

Did you buy this gun to sit at home and simply stare at all day….Let your buddies just drool over? Or, did you buy it to actually use, fire, and carry concealed for personal and home protection?

I live in Alaska and have the XD in 45acp as my spring, summer, and fall CCW pistol. Your CCW or duty pistol is going to earn battle scars – dings and scratches. If you put one on the slide – you probably will be putting more on it over the next year, or two, or twenty. Just touch it up with a big ole black Sharpie and call it good. You can also use some of the Birchwood Casey Liquid Gun Blue or Black to help hide it.

Doing anything more – is just not worth it. ‘If’ you were assigned to the Boston Police Marine patrol and your gun was in contact with salt water – then this would be a big issue. (but you wouldn’t be carrying a gun like this – you would be using a stainless gun). In this case you would be better off having it DuraCoated.

It’s an XD. It’s made for tough work enviroments. Not like this is a $1600 Kimber.

Bottom line – get a $6 bottle of cold blue from the local gun shop or Sportsman’s Warehouse – even Wal*Mart carries the stuff – clean the area really well with alcohol and then apply. On scratches I have good luck using a Q-Tip and pushing down really hard for the first coating, medium the second, lightlly the third – then I polish it out with a very soft cloth and oil or wax. Most times you can’t even tell there has been a scratch repair.
