Jonah Hex is a film adaption of the relatively obscure DC comic created in the 1970s. Unfortunately Warner Brothers murdered this movie by making it PG-13 and slicing the hell out of it. Watch Jonah Hex online for free if you want to see the scene of the crime.

 

The Jonah Hex story is a good one. Jonah (Josh Brolin) is a Civil War soldier who is forced to kill his best friend (and fellow soldier) Jeb Turnbull. The U.S. Government sees Jonah as a traitor and murderer and places a bounty on his head. Meanwhile, Jeb’s sadistic Confederate General dad Quentin (awesome John Malkovich), seeking revenge for his son’s death, tracks down Jonah and his family.  Quentin sets Jonah’s house ablaze and forces him to watch his wife and kid burn to death. Jonah was also meant to die in the fire, but survives even though he is disfigured. Incredibly, this event has also left Jonah with mysterious powers, among them being able to bring the dead back to life with just his touch.

 

 

Jonah sets out to avenge the killing of his family but eventually learns that Quentin has died. Crushed that he will never be able to exact his revenge, he decides to become a roaming bounty hunter, killing all bad guys who get in his way, all the while avoiding the waves of Government agents sent out to hunt him down.

 

He lives this nomadic lifestyle for several years until it is discovered that Quentin has in fact never died, and that he is waging a terrorist campaign against those he feels were responsible for his son’s death … the U.S. Government. When President Ulysses S. Grant (Aidan Quinn) learns that Turnbull has captured a secret, incredibly powerful weapon described as a “nation killer, and becomes worried that Turnbull’s actions will interfere with the difficult efforts of Reconstruction, he demands Quentin be stopped. To accomplish this, Grant makes Jonah an offer …. stop Quentin and all will be forgiven, the Government will leave Jonah alone.

With prostitute Lilah (Megan Fox), the only person he trusts, accompanying him, Jonah sets out to even the score.

 

Now this is a great storyline and the actors are all very good, but the movie still fails. The reason has already become legendary. The studio kept meddling in the making of this movie. After the film was finished and previewed to universal enthusiastic response, Warner Bothers demanded that the movie be cut to a ridiculously short running time, and worse …. that this sure-to-be western classic be edited to get a PG-13 rating.

 

So now we have entire scenes cut out to make the time limit. This has introduced all kinds of story line continuity problems. The characters reference recent events that the audience hasn’t seen. The dialog is chopped up so that the sentences average just a few words each. The action scenes are a jumbled mess of poorly sequenced images that make what’s going on darn near incomprehensible. And most laughably, the prostitute Lilah uses “PG-13 speak”.  Not a single borderline profanity leaves her lips.

 

So much had been edited out that the producers are forced to have Josh Brolin do a voice over narration to begin the film. When a film resorts to having to “explain” to its audience instead of “showing” its audience, you have problems.

 

Josh Brolin is good as the tortured, trigger happy bounty hunter with a score to settle. He continues to amaze since his starring role in No Country For Old Men.

 

John Malkovich is about as dependable as it gets in any villainous role. His maniacal, rogue Confederate General will scare the hell out of you with his steely eyed stare.

 

Megan Fox is, as always, just gorgeous as the prostitue. Her bustier is pulled so tight that her top looks like it is going to explode. For some reason she seems to be always sweating in this movie. I guess it was hot back in the middle 1800s.

 

This movie could have been great. The potential was certainly there.
