Why does the engine block have to be grounded to the chassis when it is CONNECTED to the chassis?
I am upgrading my big three and i am frustrated. My 1994 Ford Ranger is cluttered under the hood and it’s hard to do anything. I can’t find/get to my engine block ground to upgrade it. Can I just attach anywhere to the engine block and chassis to upgrade it’s ground. Why can’t I just ground the alternator housing or whatever?
Most motor mounts are actually made partly of rubber, with no actual metal continuity from engine to chassis. Vehicles need a fairly thick ground wire from the engine back to the battery (ultimately) because of the starter, which takes way more current than any other electrical item. This ground wire can either be directly back to the battery, or to the chassis, then another from the chassis to the battery. A smaller ground strap is required from the chassis back to the battery to provide a return path for the other electrical items, if the one from the engine goes straight to the battery.
Probably best to avoid using the Alternator for your engine ground connection, as it could fry the diodes or the voltage regulator that most of them contain nowadays. Same with ignition system components. The magnetic field that current running through a wire creates is another factor there. Otherwise, pretty much any substantial piece of metal should do fine.
Nick brings up a good point I had forgotten to mention. On vehicles with frames, a ground between the frame and the body can be important too. Had some really whacky taillight action on my old pickup truck when the strap between the bed and the frame broke on me. On unibody vehicles, it’s all the same.
