Furniture which has lost it’s lustre nevertheless is unmarked can get it’s sparkle restored pretty easily. Rub the surface using a course fabric dampened with white spirit. This can release the accumulated wax and muck, that may then be taken off using a clean rag. Improve the shine simply by rubbing using a polish reviver or maybe burnishing compound substance, obtainable through Do it yourself stores, or using a steel polish. Put it on by using a soft mutton cloth or stockinet: cloth made up of artificial fibres will not create a decent gloss. Finish by rubbing intensely using a fresh gentle cloth.
Should the finish on an item of furniture has been badly impaired, it will have to be cleaned up and removed in order that a good finish can be applied. Try a solvent cleaner in order to take off a finish. Do not use caustic soda, that may darken most woods, or a sander, that will leave circular marks that may show right through the finished film. Preferably stripping should be done outside, however if this isn’t possible stand the furniture on a large polythene sheet to safeguard the floor and ensure the room is well ventilated.
Dab the paint remover on liberally and after a short while get rid of whenever you can using a flat scraper. French polish can often give a finish, however it requires a reasonable degree of ability in application and it’s surface is very easily marked by heating, solvents as well as abrasions.
Any two part plastic finish lacquer will give every bit as good a finish and will likely be more resistant to marking. On the other hand a polyurethane finish will be acceptable for a lot of surfaces and is quickly applied with a brush. To get an antique finish apply no less than two layers and rub the last coat with the grain using 000 wire wool and wax polish, then complete with a clean soft cloth.
Removing Water Stains
Any finish that reveals water and heat marks is normally shellac or cellulose. Marks which have not permeated right through to the wood is often removed by using a cutting mix, obtainable through DIY shops or with steel polish applied in with a soft cloth. But if they have gone through, stripping will be required and the entire surface area should be treated. A grey or black stain generally suggests that water has penetrated to the wood itself, remove the existing finish and take away the spot using a two part wood bleach accessible from DIY and
paint retailers, or using a solution of 1 tablespoon of oxalic acid and 1 pint of water. Scuff marks And burn marks

Alternatively, reduce a shellac varnish with methylated spirits into a thin solution and apply this carefully to the scratch with a little soft brush, or perhaps a toothpick. Continue doing this method until the spot appears proud of the surface area, after that level it with very fine glasspaper or wet-or-dry paper. Bring back the shine using steel polish or burnishing compound.
Burn marks tend to be difficult to restore. Scrape away the finish around the burned area and also in the charred wood underneath. Sand the bare wood using glasspaper if required restain it. After that use several coats of clear finish until the mark is raised above the nearby surface and complete as you might for a scratch mark. The deep hole may be filled up with coloured beeswax.
When furniture has split or chipped, usually brought on by central heating, stripping is important. Dings and dents can be done less obvious by applications of clear finish, but stripping is generally necessary to remove them. Following stripping either sand the surrounding area until the dent is no longer obvious or use a little water to the dented region in order to enlarge the wood fibres.
If a finish has become ‘crazed’ it is usually made from cellulose and can’t be reconditioned, just replaced. Stripping is necessary, as it is having a finish that has faded through exposure to strong sunshine.
