can someone explain a “walking foot” on a sewing machine? please?
I am looking for a heavy duty sewing machine to repair sails and canvas. I don’t know a lot about sewing machines but this machine With walking foot intrigues me
A walking foot sewing machine has a foot that actually helps pull the top fabric layer in time with the movement of the bottom layer of fabric (which is being transported by feed dogs). Without a walking foot or knowing how to handle two layers of fabric properly, the top layer of fabric will come out “longer” than the bottom layer.
There is another type of machine that can also be useful to sailmakers, called a “needlefeed” or “compound needlefeed” machine… it uses the needle to help transport the fabric.

Don’t let someone confuse a true industrial machine with the old home sewing machines being mislabeled on ebay or similar places as “industrial strength”. Nor should you confuse the “walking foot” for home sewing machine (it’s an attachment) to a walking foot machine.
