Where on Earth’s crust did scientists drill into in 1984?
In 1984, scientists attempted to drill into the Earth to explore its inner layers. However, because the temperature increases as the drill depth increases, it made it virtually impossible to reach the inner Earth.
This is the info I need:
1. Research where on the crust that scientists drilled into the Earth and tell how far they got.
2. Compare the depth drilled to the height of Mt. Everest (8,850m high). What’s the difference?
3. Did the scientists drill into the mantle?

The Kola Superdeep Borehole was drilled in 1984. It was drilled into the baltic sheild on the Kola Peninsula, Murmansk Region, Russia. It reached a final depth of 12,261m after 14 years of drilling. The target was 15km deep, but this was not reached as the temperature at 12km was greater than expected and the equipment could not cope. It was drilled into the deep crystalline basement rocks of the crust. The upper part were tholeiitic basalts and proterozoic greenschist andesites. The lower parts were archean gneisses and amphibolites. Mineralised veins were found throughout.
They drilled around 140% the height of Mt Everest, however in the opposite direction (depth).
They did not get into the mantle.
For interest, another borehole was drilled between 1985 and 1994 in Oberpfalz, German. This was the KTB (German Continental Deep Drilling Programme) and this reached a final depth of around 9km, where temperatures reached 265. It showed rocks of brittle deformation and ductile at depth, indicating it had reached the brittle-plastic transition zone.
