HOW DO YOU WIRE A DIMMER SWITCH TO AN EXISTING 2 WIRE (BLACK AND WHITE) BOX?
DIMMER SWITCH HAS 4 WIRES . BLACK, GREEN AND 2 REDS. EXISTING BOX HAS ONLY 2 WIRES COMING OUT OF IT. BLACK AND WHITE. HOW DO YOU CONNECT THOSE WIRES TO MAKE THE DIMMER SWITCH WORK?
You have a three-way dimmer switch in front of you. It’s more than you need, but you can still use it.
Cap one of the red wires with a small wire nut. You won’t need it. Then, black-to-black, and the remaining red wire from the dimmer to the white wire in the box.
Connect the green (ground) wire from the dimmer to any bare copper wire in the box if there is one. If not, (and assuming that the box is steel, not plastic), connect it to any mounting bolt in the box.
