Die Hard – The Original Action Film
Arguably the greatest action series of all time, the original Die Hard introduced the world to the ultimate badass – John McClane. Long before Marvel began making superheroes like “Iron Man” a regular mainstay on the silver screen, NYPD John McClane (played by Bruce Willis) was mashing heads and blowing buildings to the sky. The 1988 action film was directed by John McTiernan and written by Jeb Stuart and Steven E. de Souza. The idea for the film came from a 1979 novel by Roderick Thorp titled Nothing Lasts Forever, itself a sequel to the book The Detective, which was previously made into a 1968 film starring Frank Sinatra.
McClane has just arrived in Los Angeles to spend Christmas with his wife. Unfortunately, it is not going to be a Merry Christmas for everyone. A group of terrorists, led by Hans Gruber, is holding everyone in the Nakatomi Plaza building hostage. With no way of anyone getting in or out, it is up to McClane to stop all the bad guys. When Die Hard was released, it was highly acclaimed by critics and considered to be one of the best action films of its era. Based on 50 reviews collected by the film review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes, 94% of critics gave Die Hard a positive review, with an average rating of 8.2/10. The film’s title and its story of a lone hero battling a multitude of single-minded opponents in an isolated setting also became a common descriptor for later action movies: “Die Hard on a _____” became a simple and easy way to define the plot of many action films that came in its wake. For example, 1994′s Speed was called “Die Hard on a bus” and 1996′s The Rock was dubbed “Die Hard on an island.”
Die Hard had a budget of $28 million. Released in 21 theaters on July 15, 1988 it widened to 1,276 theaters the following weekend, grossing $7.1 million. The film earned $83 million domestically and $140.7 million worldwide. The film was nominated for four Academy Awards, which included Best Sound Effects Editing, Best Film Editing, Best Sound and Best Visual Effects. Three successful sequels spawned from the original – Die Hard: Die Hard 2 (1990), Die Hard with a Vengeance (1995) and Live Free or Die Hard (2007), all featuring Willis as McClane. A fifth film in the series, with the working title Die Hard 24/7, is in the scripting stage and is tentatively planned to begin filming in 2011.
Die Hard without a doubt has immortalized Bruce Willis. John McClane is the ultimate guys’ guy: he is funny, charismatic – a true brute that doesn’t need to utter the typical obnoxious catch phrases. He is constantly pissing off his superiors, reinforcing the motto that you can do what you want so long as you save the day time and time again.
