Granite Edges Can Make Or Break Your Kitchen Design
Kitchen countertop options are many and varied, but one that is often overlooked is the choice of granite edges. It’s important to know exactly what you should take into account when looking for a great granite edge for your countertop. Most people will look at a countertop and either like it or not, but they won’t consiously realise how much difference the edge makes. Granite’s natural beauty, with its grain and color patterns could be enhanced and be given that sense of completeness if it has the appropriate edge. So making sure you choose the most appropriate edge is quite a critical choice. Not to mention – it will add more value to it.
It is a general practice in the stone industry to have your countertop blend with the overall theme or décor of your house. That also includes the type of edge you will install on your countertop. Everything must be harmoniously designed or your countertop may appear out of place. You also need to consider the frequency of the activities that your countertop will be subjected to in choosing the appropriate edge. To help you in your selection, here are some of the most common granite edge designs together with brief information on their applicability.
Straight Edge
Most standard homes have countertops finished with a straight edge. Straight edges tend to be the strongest, so the more often you use our kitchen, the more sense it makes to get on of these edges. The edges are also easily cleaned and maintained because of the straightforward design. Actually, the edges are not really straight but are eased off, and rounded off a bit to reduce its sharpness thus making it safer.
Bullnose Edge
Circular shapes are the basic shapes of bullnose edge. There are also several variations in this type. One such variation is the half-bullnose, where it’s only the upper half of the edge that is rounded. A variation of this is the full-bullnose where the profile of the edge is shaped like a half-moon. Two more variations include the ¼ bullnose and the demi-bullnose. If you will use your countertop frequently, this edge will also be appropriate. This edge is most often used in conventionally designed homes.
Bevel Edge
For a home whose main design feature is straight lines, added a bevel edge finish to the countertops can be a great finishing touch. These edges are beveled 45º from either the top of the bottom of the countertop surface. This angled edge makes it more attractive than the simple eased off edge. There are also a number of variations in this design. You can choose the ¼ bevel, the ½ bevel, or the ¼ bevel on the top and bottom of the edge. This type of design will be appropriate if you have a moderate to high daily activity in your countertop.
With the use of CNC machines, stone manufacturers can now easily produced complex granite edge designs which they have difficulty of doing in the past. These edges are called Ogee and are appropriate for conventional, modern as well as avant garde homes. The Ogee combines the different bullnose and bevel shapes to form complex designs.
