How do you insall a GFCI receptacle with 6 incoming wires (not including ground wire)?
My old GFCI is not tripping anymore. So I purchased a Cooper GFCI receptacle, which gives instructions for 4 wires, but says if there is more than 4 have an electrician do it.
There are 4 load wires going into my old receptacle. That receptacle had wires coming out of it and my new one only has input holes. The old GFCI was wired so that 2 of incoming loads were wired together to one on the loads on the old GFCI. This was done twice so that in effect the 4 loads became 2. When I look at my new GFCI it seems there is a place for 4 incoming load wires. A GFCI receptacle typically has two terminals to connect the line, two terminals for the load and one ground terminal. The pdf file indicates that yours is like this.
The “line” connection is for electricity to come into the outlet. You other receptacle should have been marked to indicate one set of the wires was for the line connection as well. If you can’t remember which was which, the single set of wires (one white, one black) should be the line connection. Connect the white wire to the silver terminal, black to the brass terminal, using the set marked “line”.
The remaining wires will connect to the “load” connections. The load side provides power to additional outlets with GFCI protection. If this GFCI trips, power will be interrupted to these additional outlets and a fault on one of them will trip the GFCI.
Since this outlet has terminals instead of wires, you will need to make a set of pigtails for the connection. You will need a short piece of wire (4″ or so), same type as was used to wire your house. Remove the wires from the bundle and strip 1/2″ from both ends. Purchase 2 wire nuts, you will need to check the package and get the proper size to connect 3 wires of the size you have, should be 3 #12, maybe 14. Use the wire nuts to connect the two existing wires of the same color with the pigtail you created. Attach each pigtail to the appropriate screw on the load side.
The ground wire is similar. You need to add your pigtail to the existing wires and connect it to the green screw. They are usually just twisted together without a connector. You will need to straighten the existing ground wires and twist all of them back together with your pigtail included. It is not sufficient to just wrap your pigtail around what is already there.
