Elegant, Modern Concrete Countertops
Most of us are familiar with concrete walls, floors and ceilings. But now the latest trend is to have kitchen countertops that are made of concrete. To some, concrete is just plain dull. Manufacturers of concrete countertops have a way of making them so attractive that they can rival expensive stones like granite in their beauty and durability. The key is the fact that they are highly polished. So if you’re still considering kitchen countertop options, then this could be one worth considering.
Compared to hard stones concrete is a bit softer to the touch. You can also customize the countertops to fit with whatever design you have in your home. Any color and texture that you may require can easily be incorporated in the concrete surface. This is possible because each countertop is individually cast into a mold, making it possible to mix different sets of colors and textures for each of them. The strength and durability will be similar to a hard stone countertop. All of your kitchen countertop activities will be easily handled by concrete countertops. When the countertop surface is properly finished and polished, you can even use it as a decorative piece of furniture.
The way these countertops are made is by mixing together color pigments, acrylic, fillers and aggregates with the concrete The amount of each element will be determined by the exact design requirements. Steel bars, wire mesh and fibreglass are also used in order to strengthen the structure. After this is poured into a mold, it needs at least 48 hours to set. After hardening, the countertop surface will be sanded down to toughen it further. And finally an epoxy sealant is used to seal the countertop, as this will help increase durability. The end-product will be a polished concrete countertop that is able to withstand daily wear and tear. It will also be highly resistant to stains and heat.
The most common concrete countertops are around 1.5 inches to 2 inches thick. They weigh about 19 pounds per square foot. Depending on the application of the countertop, you can choose the thickness and the color hues. Countertop sinks, soap dishes and drain boards can also be integrated during the molding process. You can have a countertop without seams or joints which is structurally stronger. If you want to maintain the shine of your concrete countertops, you need to be careful in using them because cement naturally grows dull after sometime. Apart from using them carefully, you need to periodically seal and re-polish them.
The cost of concrete countertops will depend on the way they are built, their components, their design, and the rate of the maker. The most attractive finishes are the honed, ground and diamond polished. Ground polished concrete countertop will cost you from $65 to $75 per square foot, while the diamond polished will range from $180 to $200 per square foot.
