Now that the containment cap is working and the pipeline is not leaking, why does BP still plan to plug the?
pipeline with heavy mud and concrete? Instead, why don’t they bore another hole into the pool of oil and set up another pipeline to drain the oil?
The exact condition of the existing well is not known so they and the government are not comfortable with them converting it into a producing well. For that reason they will still permanently plug the well.
The oil reservoir is not really a pool of oil but a rock formation, usually sandstone in the Gulf of Mexico, that is saturated in its pores with oil and gas at very high pressure (in this case a pressure in excess of 9,000 psi). The best way to get the oil out is by having multiple wells. If you only drill one well it can take decades to fully drain the reservoir and in the process you end up producing less oil than if you have multiple wells.
To drain a oil reservoir you usually need multiple wells depending of the size of the reservoir that can be any where from 5 wells to 20 or more. I am sure once they have the existing well plugged and all of the political dancing around is done. The government will allow the oil companies to resume their deep water activities. At that time, BP will convert the two relief wells into producing wells. They will simply pull back a distance and redirect the two wells to a different location near but not exactly at the existing well location.
