Free energy and redox reactions/ Bond Orders?
Hi there, I’m stuck on a few questions for chemistry/thermodynamics and i have no idea how to do them.. so if you could explain how to do it that would be very much appareciated!
1. Write a balanced equation for the oxidation of iron(III) Sulphate by cerium (IV) sulphate. Calculate dG’ for your reaction.
Ce4+/ Ce3+ = 1.61 V
Fe3+/Fe2+ = 0.77 V
F = 96 500
2. On the basis of a simple molecular orbital model, write down the ground state configuration of the O2 2- ion and calculate it’s bond order. Show whether it’s diamagnetic or paramagnetic.
i have no idea how to tell what is antibonding or bonding.. i know the equation is 1/2 (bonding – antibonding) but how do you tell which e- are in the bonding/antibonding orbital.
Also, another thing is when a question asks you what resolution of mass spectrometer to use to distiguish between two similiar compounds.. what do you write?

Both of these are as oxidized as they are going to get. Perhaps you mean the oxidation of Fe2+?

O2^2- will have a bond order of 1 and no unpaired electrons, hence it is diamagnetic.

Resolution, R, is the ratio of the mass of the ion to the smallest difference between two adjacent peaks, Dm
R = m / Dm
If R = 100 then one mass must be at least 1% smaller or larger than the other. The greater the value of R the better the resolution. An R of 1000 means there is only 0.1% difference in masses.
