Making a small transformer for an experiment but need help:?
I just want to create a small low amperage transformer with high enough voltage to create a 2 inch spark gap. If I took a thick iron nail and wrapped a primary coil on it then wrapped a secondary over it, can it make an efficient transformer core like the squarish ones you find in appliances? I know it is possible to cascade transformers so would the efficiency be conserved enough if I cascaded 4 of these 10:1 transformers?
A coil able to yield a 2 inch (50mm) spark is a heroic undertaking.
The breakdown voltage of dry air is a few kV per mm – so you’ll need a secondary that can produce 50kV or so.
You’ll find this very difficult.
Why do you need a 50mm spark?
Have a look at Tesla coils – you’ll see the complexity required.
