do i need to replace the timing chain on my 93 nissan altima?
it has 130,000 miles on it and it is making a rattling noise. a mechanic told me it was coming from the timing chain. is the rattling noise an urgent matter or can it wait? if it needs replacement how much might this cost me? also the engine has an unusual amount of vibration. can this be a result of the busted timing chain? or simply another repair that must be done?
The primary reason for this noise id FAULTY OIL CHOICES. Your timing chain tensioner is hydraulic. It requires oil pressure to increase it’s tension. If your engine is full of sludge, the oil cannot reach it!! De-sludge with Seafoam or Amsoil crankcase cleaner, then switch of regular oil FOREVER!!!! Use either Mobil One, elf, or Pennzoil Platinum. Make sure that whichever oil you use, it says “Meets Nissan specifications” Or read your owner’s manual about GL-4 oils and JASO ratings. STAY AWAY FROM QUICKY LUBE generic, cheap oil. THis is usually the cause and NOT chain wear. WHen your tensioner is clean, it will do it’s job. ELF makes a special oil JUST for Asian cars. Try to find it,it’s GREAT!!! Your engine will LOVE you for it!!
