I need to step down a marine battery from 12vdc to 10vdc 350mA?
i would like to run some led lites from a deep cell marine battery, the 110vac transformer that came with the lights has an output of 10 VDC with 350mA. the battery is 12VDC, 450 cold cranking amps, 550 amps straight use. the wire i am using at present is cat 5e.any help would be much appreciated. Thank You
You’re better off with a resistor to drop the voltage. That will better handle the voltage variation you’ll see on a lead-acid battery. If it’s actually used to start an internal combustion engine, you’ll also get some very serious drops and spikes during starting. The spikes could destroy your LEDs, so you might also need a Zener or MOV clamp. Measure the current your lights actually draw during use, and use Ohm’s Law to calculate a suitable dropping resistor For example, to drop 2V at 350mA, you would want 2.7 ohms. It would dissipate 0.7W, so you would need one rated at at least 1W, preferably higher, with adequate ventilation. Cat 5e should easily handle the current.
