Baseboard Installation Basics
Baseboard installation is not a difficult task. Taking precise measurements and making straight mitered cuts will ensure that the baseboard will have a professional look when completed.
Where to Start
You should always start on the longest wall. Baseboard installation begins with a straight cut piece of trim. The end of this first piece will fit flush against the drywall. Measure the length of that wall and transfer that measurement to the piece of trim. Add one eight of an inch to this measurement. Using a carpenters pencil, mark the edge to be miter cut.
Before you cut your first piece, make a few practice cuts keeping the practice pieces. These pieces need to be about four inches long. These pieces will be the gauge for baseboard trim placement if their will be carpeting laid in the room. With the finished edge facing outward, make a 45 degree cut with your miter saw. You should cut outside your pencil mark to allow for trimming if needed. Cutting outside your pencil marks is standard for all types of baseboard installation.
Finding Studs
Once you have cut the first piece of trim, you will take that piece to the wall. Place your small trim pieces under the long trim piece if the room is to be carpeted. Find a stud near the center of the long piece of trim. A stud finder is a nice tool to have but it is not necessary. Once you find a stud, you’ll measure out in both directions every 16 inches or so.
Keep in mind that in most modern construction, studs are placed every 16 inches. Finding studs in older homes and special built homes may be a bit more complicated since studs are not always found at even intervals. Mark the stud locations on the floor with your pencil. Once you are sure that the trim fits well nail the trim to the studs at regular intervals.
Inside or Closed Corners
Most rooms have closed corners, which means you will need to be concerned with how to cope these corners. There are other methods however coping inside corners is the quickest and neatest.
Outside or Open Corners
With outside corners or open corners at 90 degrees a good tip for installing baseboard is to cut each piece at 46 degrees instead of 45 degrees. This extra degree will almost always give you a nice tight fit at an outside corners. With the trim facing inward or away from you on the miter saw, make a 46 degree cut along the edge that you have marked. Remember to cut outside your pencil line to allow for fitting. If you apply a thin bead of carpenter glue to the baseboard trim corner before nailing, you’ll find it helps to provide a strong miter with a professional finish.
Baseboard installation is one way to reduce the cost of remodeling an existing home or building a new home. Once you know how to make miter cuts, the rest is easy.
