The Path to Finding True Happiness
What is true happiness? One of the definitions from dictionary.com is a feeling of “good fortune, pleasure, contentment, and joy.” I think a lot of human beings struggle to find happiness all their lives because a lot of happiness is defined by having the things we want to have but don’t have.
If you ask somebody out on a date and they finally say yes, that brings you happiness. If you finally with that person you’ve seeked all your life, that bring brings you happiness. If you’ve wanted a car you saw in a magazine ad and you finally got it, that brings you happiness. If you finally can afford a house next to the ocean beach, that brings you happiness.
I think true happiness comes from a moment of accomplishment where reaching that goal meant going through a series of painstaking obstacles, however much one doesn’t like to hear that, whether mental or physical.
I mean one could be given a date (such a blind date), a lover, a car, or a house, but in my opinion, it wouldn’t really bring true happiness because they don’t know what it is like to work for it and experience that path of struggle. They may enjoy these things, but it won’t be that memorable…
True happiness comes from something that’s memorable, something that you have perhaps experience pain, fear, and misery even, to get something that you wanted. And this memory, this accomplishment that you have, will always stay with you for the rest of your life.
You can think of it as a trophy or a medal. Both of these awards have a purpose. If you watch sports, or have recently watched the Olympics, you understand how much one person or one team has to work in order to achieve 1st place in anything. They prepare, sweat, and train day in and day out during for many weeks, months, and even years just for that one moment… that one chance.
A trophy that is given to someone with no purpose, besides the material it’s made out of, is meaningless. It’s just like that person who gets what they want – the car, the money, the house, etc. They experience momentary happiness, but it’s nothing compared to winning that gold medal. And whatever you want in life, can be compared to that gold medal. Don’t aim for silver or bronze, aim for the gold, even when it seems out of site.
True happiness doesn’t come from the gift itself, but on the path to getting the gift and sometimes this path can be extraordinary difficult. But however more difficult your path is right now, the happier you’ll be when you overcome this obstacle.
For some, happiness is not getting a brand new car or a brand new suit; it’s surviving life. If you have ever seen the movie Cast Away, it’s a great example of this. Tom Hanks plays a person who survives a plane crash, is stuck in an unknown island by himself for years, until he finds a way from literally scraps of material to be able to make a boat to travel out in the ocean to get help.
To be able to survive days of isolation and loneliness and gout out of it all, I’m sure that very moment of being saved, he was the happiest man on earth. And that is something that this person can keep for the rest of his life. He may not have everything, but he has his life. And his life signifies an accomplishment from what seemed like an impossible path to take.
I know it’s just a movie, but people do survive horrific events in their lives. Like Tom Hanks in the movie, when surviving is all you have left, you will do whatever it takes to live. And it’s heart-breaking to see people give up on their goals and dreams because they are going through a “difficult time.” The path to true happiness isn’t something that’s supposed to be easy. It’s not given to you; you must create it for yourself.
There is a difference between happiness and true happiness. Happiness, is just experiencing pleasure or satisfaction for a short period of time. You can achieve happiness by listening to your favorite songs on your Ipod, making your friends laugh, having a fun conversation with other people, or thinking of a happy memory. And I encourage you to do this when times are tough.
Be in a feel-good state, because when you’re on a rocky path to finding true happiness, you will have moments where you feel like you want to give up and forget about it. You will feed bad, angry, frustrated, and depressed and these feelings will only halt you from achieving true happiness.
It’s impossible to always stay happy all the time, because stuff happens that are out of our immediate control. But that doesn’t mean you can’t have a positive attitude or try your best doing so. If you want to be in a happy state even when you’re feeling bad, you will advance to whatever you want quicker, to whatever that “gold medal” of your is.
And even if you’re in an unhappy state right now, it’s better if you think about what makes you happy, or what it feels like to break free and live the lifestyle that you want. The harder your path is right now, means that the more benefits you will get once it is accomplished. And it is at that point where you will find true happiness; something that will last with you for many years.
Napoleon Hill once said:
“Every adversity, every failure, and every heartache carries with it the Seed of an equivalent or a great Benefit.”
Henry Ford once said:
“There is no happiness except in the realization that we have accomplished something.”
When you combine these quotes together, the message is that happiness doesn’t come from something that is given to you or something that we already have, but the path of getting thereourselves and getting it ourselves. The path may be difficult, but the more difficult the path, the closer one will be to finding true happiness.
