Is ethanol free fuel better for my boat?

I have an 06 Trophy with a 125 Mercury Saltwater motor. I ran into someone that works at the marina and she said that they only carry ethanol free fuel because it’s better(and expensive). I have never had a problem with my motor running badly with regular unleaded fuel but would certainly like to prolong its life. Anyone have any suggestions?

She is correct, non ethanol is better, but Ethanol will not damage your engine, Methanol will. I have not seen methanol being sold in a long time. Regular is ok in a pinch, but I follow the Mfg recommendation and use 87, I will go to 92 in a pinch or drop to 85, but at those times I add no more fuel than I need too.

There are issues with the ethanol absorbing water and a few other things such as separation which can occur in your fuel tank but those conditions are limited and can be fixed with a fuel water separator in your fuel line. Anyhow do a little search and you will find quiet a bit on the subject, I have a 2008 Mercury 150 and was concerned about the ethanol but it appears to be nothing if you take steps early and use the fuel stabilizer to keep it from going bad on you. Check your engine, mine has a filer on it already which acts a water separator, but I plan on adding an additional one in line which will be larger. You should find information on the issue in your owners manual, mine does.
